About Us
Beyond the City was created to share the love of and access to travel with the underserved youth in the Greater Grand Rapids area. We are committed to providing FREE travel adventures beyond the Greater Grand Rapids Area to inspire youth through the experience of travel.
Travel can significantly build confidence and boost development of youth as they make their way through unfamiliar territory, both physically and psychologically. These experiences and opportunities are going to impact who they become as adults by creating a sense of belonging while celebrating their communities. Learning doesn't only happen in the classroom. Beyond the City creates hands-on experiences outside the city limits and outside of the traditional classrooms that allow our youth to explore their culture, history, and excellence across the country. Travel has the power to change lives and open our youth's minds to the endless possibilities of their future while building stronger communities.
Our Team
All members of our team are dynamic, multi-talented, and passionate individuals who create and run programs for youth that hold the possibility of changing lives. Regardless of how we arrived or where we came from, what binds us is our unending devotion and commitment to the experience of our students. We all share a desire to reach beyond our comfort zones, discover new possibilities, and evolve beyond our perceived limits.
Addie Donley
Board Chair and Founder
As a founder of Beyond the City, Addie is a passionate community advocate and a dedicated champion of youth. With a steadfast commitment to empowering those in need of support, resources or encouragement, Addie spends her time tirelessly creating positive change and working to break down systematic barriers faced by BIPOC youth.
Lucy G.
Youth Board Member
Lucy is a 10th grader at Museum High School. She is very passionate about being involved in her community and finding different ways to help. She is a part of many different non profits like Camp ARYV, BTC, and Safe Haven she also enjoys being a part of the arts. She has her own jewelry business where she makes and sells earrings she also likes painting in her free time.
Chivonne Townsend
Board Member
Chivonne is a lifelong resident of Grand Rapids, MI, where she has built a fulfilling life centered around family and community. She is a dedicated mother of three wonderful children.
For the past four years, Chivonne has been actively involved in child care, bringing her nurturing and compassionate nature to create a safe and enriching environment for children.
Maggie Smith
Committee Member/ Ambassador
Maggie grew up in the affluent town of East Grand Rapids, MI and like most of her classmates, travel was a regular part of her life as a kid. As the daughter of bird watchers, she spent her childhood exploring the natural wonders of Michigan's forests and shores. Before she was even twenty years old, she was able to use academic opportunities to travel to Australia, New Zealand, Washington DC, Italy, and Greece.
